Work community game supports discussion at TNT

TNT Finland, Inc. started an organization-wide personnel development project in the summer of 2008. The project name OTAVA means “take responsibility and influence”. The goal of the project was for people to feel good about their work and to find it meaningful to influence and participate. It is important to TNT that all personnel know their basic work task and participate in their own task development in an active manner. The management participated in the project as well. Their role in the project was the same as that which they perform in their company: setting goals, supporting and coaching.

The project started with workshops, the subject of which was employee skills. The method used in the workshops was an employee skill game. This game is a practical and innovative tool that facilitates discussion about chosen subjects. The workshops went smoothly, and the participants found the workshops to be an inspiring and efficient way to start the project. The OTAVA project was implemented by Muutostaito consultants Sami Sarén, Kari Malinen and Marjut Piili. The project was planned in a way that highlighted practicality. It was therefore decided that along with the workshops and seminars a Muutostaito consultant would regularly visit different working groups and units so that the development process would continue in the work places. This process was called “Lähiohjaus/Closecontrol” meaning development process follow-up.

In practice this means that there were development group or operative meetings at which Kari Malinen participated as a facilitator. The main idea was to implement and bring up ideas to deal with everyday problems or challenges at hand. This facilitation process has produced good results at TNT. “The people come to talk more with their supervisors.” “Gathering information from employees is no longer like pulling teeth; issues are brought up more openly. The effect has been surprisingly significant”, says Petteri Lounasranta, one of the operative foremen at the Helsinki unit.
